The Crucifixion, Page 380

This page has the only full-page miniature in the missal, showing Christ's Crucifixion. It appears just before the text for the central and most solemn part of the service, to provide an immediate visual reminder of Christ's ultimate sacrifice.

The Sherborne Crucifixion is one of the unquestioned masterpieces of its age and a great monument of the International Gothic style. In contrast to other miniatures, the focal point is not Christ on the cross, but the Virgin Mary and her attendants. It is placed opposite a blank page, without other distraction and functions as an icon or altarpiece in its own right.
