UOSH Artist in Residence

AWATE has been producing music for over fifteen years. He learned his craft from mentors including Stylah and Lowkey from the legendary UK group Poisonous Poets, BBC 1Xtra’s DJ Semtex and boyhood hero, Yasiin Bey (formerly Mos Def).

Bringing his visionary creative approach to the British Library, AWATE will serve a five-month residency at the Library, exploring the subject of immigration and displaced communities using our sound collections.

During his time at the Library, he is interested in producing a long-form, loose narrative musical piece that weaves together audio interviews and music from the archives. Working with two youth music groups, he intends to combine instruments from around the world and voices with modern production techniques and poems, to create a final piece that aims to take the form of a modern opera.
