Matthew Jacka
Position
Policy Advisor, IPO
Matthew works on our Get Ready for Business Growth scale-up programme and delivers the IP sessions. He joined the Intellectual Property Office in January 2021 as a Designs Examiner and as a result garnered a good understanding of how the rights granting departments at the IPO work. He moved across department in the summer of 2022 to the Business Support Team where he currently holds the position of Policy Advisor.

What can people expect from your session?

“My workshop will give you an overview of intellectual property, specifically the main rights granting areas of trade marks, registered designs, patents and copyright, and broaden your knowledge on these.

The aim is to inform businesses of how IP is an asset, and that it should be treated like that from the outset. It's a very engaging workshop where you'll be able to contribute, delivered by passionate colleagues of mine who have excellent, detailed IP knowledge. We don’t want a workshop where we are just talking at attendees for the duration but one where you can provide your own input during activities that are enjoyable.”

What’s the one BIPC resource you love to recommend to people?

“A BIPC resource I love to recommend is the COBRA database, it's a very useful tool for business intermediaries who utilise the BIPCs. I know that a lot of the key topics relating to IP are really well covered if someone was to search on COBRA - not only that but the articles are presented in a very clear and organised manner of course simplifying the matter for the user.”

Your best piece of business advice?

“‘Fail to prepare, then prepare to fail. Due diligence is needed in the business sector and I think this ties in with IP quite well."

Tell us something about you.

“Outside of work I’m a very keen sportsman who plays both football and cricket for my local clubs.”
