National Library of Wales is one of 10 UK-wide partners who are helping save the nation’s sounds as part of the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage project.

Published date:

The National Library of Wales is situated in Aberystwyth, on the Ceredigion coast. Our purpose is to make our culture and heritage accessible to all to learn, research and enjoy. We are a legal deposit library, which means we have the right to a copy of every publication printed in Britain and Ireland. Our collections include archives, arts, books, films, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, photographs, sound recordings and videos.

As one of the hubs for the Unlocking Our Sound Heritage Project we will digitise many of our own sound collections as well as recordings from our Partners across Wales:

  • Traditional Welsh Music Archive, Bangor University
  • Ceramics Archive, Aberystwyth University
  • Dylan Thomas Centre, Swansea
  • St Fagans, Cardiff
  • Tiger Bay – The Heritage & Cultural Exchange
  • Tredegar Library

These recordings tell a rich story of Wales’ history and will include interviews with Welsh migrants to North America and Patagonia, dialect recordings, interviews with various industry workers, families and communities, radio sessions, Welsh music and political speeches by business men.
