Each year, we publish a Research Report that focuses on the previous academic year. We hope that these publications not only celebrate the considerable contribution that our colleagues make to research, but might inspire future research collaborations and partnerships.

2019–20 Research Report
The 2019–20 Research Report reflects on the Library’s research portfolio during the pandemic. It features content on our doctoral research, collaborative projects, events, exhibitions and international fellowships, as well as a deep-dive into our involvement in the Towards a National Collection programme.

2018–19 Research Report
Our 2018–19 Research Report showcases a range of our research activity, from three-month PhD placements to the five-year collaborative project Living with Machines. This report has a particular focus on international research, with features including the True Echoes project, British Library Chevening Fellows, and the International Dunhuang Project.

2017–18 Research Report
The 2017–18 report presents highlights from across our research portfolio, from doctoral research and international fellowship programmes, to research projects that feed into our exhibitions and learning resources, and practice-led research that underpins cutting-edge Library activity in areas such as conservation and digital preservation.
Highlights include a special look at the research that went into the sell-out exhibition Anglo-Saxon Kingdoms. Another in-depth case study examines The Business of Women’s Words project, a collaboration between the British Library and the universities of Sussex and Cambridge that explores the Library's Virago Press and Spare Rib archives.

2016–17 Research Report
Our inaugural Research Report covers the academic year 2016–17, discussing our range of activities from early career research to major collaborative national and international projects. It shows the creative and scholarly research that the Library is involved in, on subjects as diverse as health and disease in British India, feminist publishing and the works of Stefan Zweig.
The report includes commentary from staff, students and our partners, showing the personal and professional impact of the analysis, interpretation and knowledge exchange made possible by research funding. It also looks at the outputs of our research, including how we engage with others beyond the academic community through a range of publications and activities, from websites to books, to workshops and exhibitions.
