He was a senior member of the British Cabinet for nearly 40 years, serving in the important positions of Secretary of State and First Lord of the Treasury. His correspondence and papers are unique in their coverage of the intimate network of political relationships of the period, under the ministries of Walpole and the younger Pitt.
