Rhyme, rhythm, poetry & songs in the playground

Lesson rationale

This activity engages children in exploring the range and variety of word play and word games taking place in their own playground. They are also encouraged to make connections with children’s rhymes and songs featured on the Playtimes website.

Key questions in this lesson:

  • What is appealing about games that use clapping, song, rhyme and word play?
  • What linguistic and poetic features can be found in these games? For example: narratives, or ‘word-pictures’, repetition, verse-chorus structures, imagery or nonsense language?
