Joseph Rotblat (1908-2005), physicist and peace campaigner was awarded the 1995 Nobel Prize for Peace in recognition of his contributions to the Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs and other efforts to promote world peace. He started his scientific career working in nuclear physics in his native Poland before moving to the United Kingdom in 1939. There he workedon the British atomic bomb project (Tube Alloys) before moving to the United States to work on the Manhattan Project. He left this project when Germany was defeated and returned to Liverpool University. His later career was spent at London University's St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical College where his research concentrated on the application of nuclear physics to medicine.
