Mary Coombs

Mary Coombs (1929-), computer programmer, was one of the first programmers to work on the LEO computers produced by J Lyons and Co. and the first female commercial programmer. She developed programs both for internal company use and for a range of external clients as part of the business computing service offered by the firm. After a period working fromhome writing computer manuals she qualified as a teacher and worked in a number of schools before moving to a post in the water treatment industry. After retirement she helped with her son’s building business and pursued a number of hobbies.
