Mary Lee Berners-Lee
Mary Lee Berners-Lee (1924- ) computer scientist, teacher and astronomer. After wartime service at the Telecommunications Research Laboratory, Mary Lee Woods completed her studies at the University of Birmingham before taking up a post at the Mount Stromlo observatory near Canberra. After returning to the UK she was part of a team of women who worked as pioneering programmers onthe Ferranti Mark 1 computer in Manchester. Following marriage and a career break, during which she worked intermittently as a programmer, she became a mathematics teacher before returning to computer programming until her retirement in 1987.
