Bursary for African library and archive professionals

We are pleased to share that for the 2026 International Library Leaders Programme there is one professional bursary available for an applicant working in an African library or archive and who would otherwise be unable to participate in the programme.

Thanks to the generous support of Martin Plaut, one professional bursary is available for a successful applicant for the International Library Leaders Programme who is working in an African library or archive and who would otherwise be unable to participate in the programme.

The bursary covers the course fee for the International Library Leaders Programme as well as a contribution towards international travel and accommodation costs (up to a set maximum). Any further costs must be borne by the participant or their supporting institution.

The bursary applicant should apply for the International Library Leaders Programme using the online application form by the deadline, 12.00 GMT on Thursday 5 February 2026, and can indicate on the application form that they wish to be considered for the bursary.

This bursary is intended for applicants who can demonstrate a clear need for financial assistance and a strong commitment to applying the skills gained.

Applicants must be formally supported by their employing institution, to confirm their recognised role and to ensure the training will be implemented upon their return.

Eligibility criteria

To apply for the bursary, you must:

  • submit an application for the International Library Leaders Programme and indicate that you meet the eligibility criteria for the bursary and would like to be considered for it
  • be currently working in an African library or archive
  • demonstrate financial need
  • be able to attend the full duration of the course
  • provide an official letter of institutional support from the head of your institution confirming: your current role and responsibilities; the value of the training to your work; how your institution will support your participation in the full duration of the course; how your institution will enable you to apply the knowledge and skills gained upon your return; how your institution will integrate relevant learning outcomes into your ongoing responsibilities where appropriate.

The letter of support should be addressed to the International Office and be sent as a PDF to international@bl.uk by the programme application deadline, 12.00 GMT on Thursday 5 February 2026.
