Accessibility statement for our Support Us website

The British Library is committed to making its website accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

This accessibility statement applies to our Support Us website at https://support.bl.uk/.

Compliance status

This website is not compliant with the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines version 2.2 AA standard. The non-compliances and exemptions are listed below.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Non-compliance with the accessibility regulations

  • Spacer images used throughout the site do not have a null alt text tag, meaning that they will not be ignored by screen readers and other assistive technologies and users of such devices may suffer confusion when navigating the page. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.1.1 (Non-Text Content).
  • Buttons throughout the site have no accessible text content, meaning that users of assistive technologies may not perceive them or understand their function. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.1.1 (Non-Text Content) and 2.4.4 (Link in Purpose).
  • Some pages skip Heading levels, meaning users of assistive technologies may have difficulties understanding or navigating them. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criteria 1.3.1 (Info and Relationships) and 2.4.6 (Headings and Labels).
  • Interactive controls are empty, meaning that users of assistive technologies may not perceive them or understand their function. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link in Purpose).
  • The page language is not set, meaning that screen readers cannot automatically set appropriate languages and accents and therefore the page may not be comprehensible to users of those technologies. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 3.1.1 (Language of Parts).

We plan to resolve all of these issues by replacing the site in its entirety by November 2027.
