Accessibility Statement – British Library Blogs Archive

Scope

The British Library is committed to making its websites accessible, in accordance with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

The British Library operates a number of websites, subsites, and online services (“Sites”).

This accessibility statement supplements our main Accessibility Statement, and applies to the following Site:

How accessible this website is

We know some parts of this Site are not fully accessible:

  • Some archival blog content is in a language other than English, and is not tagged with the relevant language
  • Some archival blog content does not have machine readable structural components
  • Some archival blog content does not have self-descriptive link names or relies on colour to discern the presence of links
  • The menus of some archival blogs may not have sufficient size or spacing.

Compliance status

This website is fully compliant with the Public Sector Bodies (Websites and Mobile Applications) (No. 2) Accessibility Regulations 2018.

Non-accessible content

The content listed below is non-accessible for the following reasons:

Content not within the scope of the accessibility regulations

  • The structure of archival blog content may not be marked with appropriate headings, titles, or other structural components, meaning that assistive technologies can not programmatically detect the structure of the document and accurately interpret and convey the content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.3.2 (Meaningful Sequence).
  • The presence of links within archival blog material may only be signified via the use of colour, meaning that users with visual or cognitive impairments may struggle to discern their presence. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 1.4.1 (Use of Colour).
  • The purpose of links within archival blog content may not be apparent through text alone, meaning that users of assistive technologies or with cognitive impairments may struggle to understand their purpose. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.4.4 (Link Purpose in Context).
  • Touch targets of menus within archival blog content may not have sufficient size or spacing when used on mobile devices, meaning that users (and particularly those who have difficulty in confidently targeting or operating small controls) may have difficulty activating them accurately. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 2.5.8 (Target Size – Minimum)
  • Non-English phrases within archival blog material may not be marked with appropriate ‘lang’ attributes, meaning that assistive technologies can not programmatically detect the language and switch pronunciation rules and users of such technologies may not be able to understand the content. This fails WCAG 2.2 success criterion 3.1.2 (Language of Parts).

The British Library’s web archive captures websites, including the British Library’s own archival web content, in their original, unmodified format. The Library cannot in any way alter the presentation of archival works captured on behalf of the nation for preservation in perpetuity. As such, the content presented by the British Library Blogs Archive is therefore exempt from the Regulations under Reg 4(2)(f)(i) (Authenticity of reproduction of heritage items).
