The unicorn is a small goat-like creature, remarkable for its horn and its swiftness. When it catches sight of a virgin, it sleeps in her lap, and this is the only circumstance in which it can be caught. Here the beast is attacked by hunters from behind while it rests in a maidenís arms. The text identifies the unicorn with Christ. The maiden represents the Virgin Mary, in whose womb Christ becomes incarnate, and the beastís death at the hands of hunters recalls the Crucifixion.
