Music manuscripts, archives and publications

Our music manuscripts, archives and printed materials date from the Middle Ages to the present day, include material published in just about every European country, and range from medieval songs to the private papers of contemporary composers.

Music manuscripts and archives

Medieval songs and settings of the liturgy are amongst the earliest manuscript music in the collection, which also features a rich array of manuscript sources for the study of English music from the 15th century and later. There are original manuscripts of the greatest composers in the Western tradition, with a particular strength in autograph manuscripts of 20th- and 21st-century British composers. The Royal Music Library, with its Handel manuscripts, and the collection of Stefan Zweig, are of great importance too. You will also find the archives of music publishers and the private papers of composers and performers, as well as field notes and documentation from ethnomusicologists.

Printed music and books on music

At the heart of the printed music collection is the material received under legal deposit, which constitutes the most comprehensive archive of music published in the UK since the 16th century. In addition, our collection of music published in other countries is often surpassed only by the national library of the country in question. Other major printed resources include the music library of Paul Hirsch, which includes important first editions of music by composers of the first Viennese school, opera scores and theoretical works, and a substantial collection of printed music received from the musicologist Alan Tyson.

The UK Web Archive

We have been collecting websites since 2005, initially on a selective basis and since 2013 at a ‘whole domain’ level. The majority of the collection is acquired under the Non-Print Legal Deposit Regulations 2013. This allows us to take a copy of any UK digitally published resource (including websites and social media) and to make that archived copy available at UK Legal Deposit Libraries. We also request permission from some website owners to make our archived copy publicly available through our website.

The UK Web Archive is currently inaccessible to users, and we are working to restore access later this year. We are, however, continuing to acquire and preserve websites actively in the meantime. You can find updates to our work at https://www.webarchive.org.uk/ and on our UK Web Archive blog. You can access data about the UK Web Archive on our institutional repository.

UK theses and EThOS

EThOS (E-Theses Online Service) is our database of UK doctoral theses. It holds records for over 600,000 theses, allowing researchers to search theses from UK universities from the 1700s to present day. Prior to a cyber-attack in October 2023, it held over 300,000 files for download and provided a digitisation request service for theses that were only available in print.

EThOS is currently unavailable following on from the cyber-attack in 2023. However, work is underway to restore an interim version of EThOS in spring 2026. Find out about the latest update on EThOS.
