A portolan chart by Petrus Rosselli

Description

Rosselli was perhaps Italian in origin, but it was in Majorca that he produced his portolan charts in the mid-15th century – this example dates from 1465. It follows, more elaborately than Dulcert's chart a century earlier, the Catalan tradition of introducing inland features to the chart. Here, within the workmanlike outline of Morocco's Atlantic coast (top left) are not only the main inland cities – Fez (Fes'), Marrakesh (‘Morochs’) – but further towns and rivers south of the Atlas Mountains.
