In 1867 ‘The (Indian) Press and Registration of Books Act’ mandated that a copy of every work published in the provinces of British India be submitted to the India Office. The publications were recorded in the appendices to official provincial newspapers every quarter and have become known as ‘Quarterly Lists’.
This Quarterly List for the period ending March 1875 was compiled by the Bengal Library and published as part of ‘The Calcutta Gazette’. The list serves as a rich source of bibliographical information about the books published throughout Bengal, including the names and addresses of printers and publishers, publication prices and how many copies were printed. Most of the books listed here are accompanied by a brief synopsis and reveal that the books published in this quarter were wide ranging, including fiction, religion and medicine. Although most were written in Bengali, some books were published in Arabic as well.
This Quarterly List is one of many for Bengal that have been bound together into a volume covering 1875-1878, which itself is one of several volumes that together catalogue the books published between 1830 and 1954.
