The rhyme ‘Tarzan in the Jungle’ was recorded by Iona Opie in Salford, 1975. ‘Donald Duck’ was recorded in Fringford, Oxfordshire in 1978. ‘Popeye the Sailor Man’ was recorded by Iona Opie in the children’s playground of Coram Fields, London, in 1974.

Girls: [Rhyming]

Tarzan in the jungle had a belly ache,
Wants to go to toilet [blows raspberry] too late.

Boy: [Rhyming]

Donald Duck done some muck behind the kitchen door. Mrs Duck licked it up and did a whole lot more.

[children laughing]

Iona Opie:

I’m Popeye the Sailor man.

Children: [Rhyming]

Full stop. I lived in a caravan, full stop. I slept with Queen Mary, cor blimey, she’s Popeye the sailor man. Full stop, full stop, full stop. [laughter]

Child:

I’ve done another one!
