Dusting Bluebells

Description

English

This footage was recorded in Edinburgh in 1951. ‘In and Out the Dusting Bluebells’ also known as ‘In and Out the Dusty Bluebells’ was, according to the Opies in 1986, ‘one of the most popular song-games in the present day’. To play, one player would be chosen as ‘on’ while the rest of the players formed a circle and raised their hands to create arches. The player who has been chosen as ‘on’ would then dance through the arches singing: ‘In and out the dusty bluebells, Who shall be my master?’ The player would then stand behind one of the circle and tap another player on the shoulder while singing: ‘tippitty tappitty on your shoulder’. The chosen player would then link onto the first player and begin the song again, weaving through the arches. The result, according to the Opies, was ‘chaos’. The game is not thought to have developed until the early 20th century and although it enjoyed great popularity amongst girls during the 1960s and 1970s, it has now faded from modern playgrounds.
