Julián is a Mermaid by Jessica Love

Description

What is Julián is a Mermaid about?

Enchanted by three glittering passengers on an underground train, Julián announces to his Abuela (grandma) that he is in fact a mermaid. Using objects found around his Abuela’s home – flowers, leaves, lipstick and a lacy curtain – we witness Julián’s transformation into a magical sea creature.

The book shows how dressing up can enable us to explore who we are and has helped trans and gender-questioning children find acceptance.

Where is the story set?

Julián is a Mermaid is set in New York, the home of author-illustrator Jessica Love. At the beginning of the book Julián and his Abeula ride on the city’s Subway train, and later Julián takes part in the Coney Island Mermaid Parade.
