This manuscript draft of William Wordsworth's ‘The Thorn’ from Lyrical Ballads has been copied out in the hand of his sister, Dorothy Wordsworth. It is particularly rare, being one of the only surviving manuscripts containing material published in the first edition of Lyrical Ballads in September 1798. The manuscript poem is contained within the Alfoxden notebook held by Dove Cottage, home to Wordsworth.
