Portrait of Richard Burbage

This is the only known portrait of Richard Burbage (1568–1619), the leading actor in the Lord Chamberlain’s Company, and the first actor to play Shakespeare’s Hamlet, as well as the roles of Richard III, Othello, and King Lear.

Some experts have conjectured that this may have been a self-portrait. The unusual size and format of the canvas is possibly because of the practice of painting faces from life and stitching them into a larger picture later on. For some reason, this never happened with this particular picture.
